Posts: 12 10/11/09 08:13 PM	Tags : None Hi everyone. Sorry I haven't posted in a while. My work had me extremely busy and I had to go out of town for a few days. Thumper has been doing well. Dr. Moore increased his insulin to 24 units instead of 22. I have been getting better in getting Thumpers blood. I am not so nervous as I was at first. Dr Moore wants me to test at 8 am right before feed him, then around 2 pm then at 8 pm again before I feed him again. His numbers have been averaging around 275 . And at 2 pm they were about 200. Today when I woke up Thumper was acting like he wasn't feeling well. His normal burst of energy was in slow motion. At 8 am I fed him his WD. He wasn't interested in eating all of it. I had to hand feed him the rest.I have watched him closely today as I don't think he feels well. Tonight I fed him and within minutes he threw up his food. He then started eating the food. Yuk!!!! Is this something I should worry about. I don't know. Any suggestions? I am getting worried. Mindy

Posts: 1681 10/11/09 08:22 PM Owner /Administrator	Mindy When you say he is not feeling well can you give more details? How is he action? Im confussed about him eating his food after he threw up.. Most don't want to eat at all if there sick.. How is he acting?

Posts: 12 10/11/09 09:23 PM	He has not gotten up at all after throwing up. I was rubbing his belly and he yipped. His stomach is sensitive I think

Moderator Posts: 3785 10/11/09 09:52 PM	Mindy, one thing I do know for sure is a dog throws up and then eats it again it is nothing to worry about!! They ate to fast or something like that. If they don`t eat it and walk away then they are definitely not feeling well! If his tummy is sensitive and he yelped when you rubbed his belly then I would take him to the vet ASAP!! Could be nothing but it could be the beginnings of pancreatitis, something you don`t want to delay. Johanna has experience with this!! You say he is has not gotten up but is he uncomfortable other than the belly rub? Like hunching his back for one. Johnna is on this and that is good. I do know about the throw up and re eating and that is not a problem but I worry about the tummy thing.

Posts: 10014 10/11/09 09:55 PM Administrator	Mindy, I don't want to jump to any conclusions, so I want to start by asking a few questions. Have you recently changed Thumpers food? Is this the first day you have noticed this? Is Thumper drinking normal, and peeing normal? Could it be that Thumper got into the trash, or something he shouldn't have? When he threw up was it flimy (I know it wasn't digested)? Is he hunching his back? Does he feel hard below his stomach? Are you hearing any gurgling or rumbling sounds? It could be several things, that is why its important you keep an eye on him. Did you give him his insulin after or before he threw up? Tomorrow morning, make sure he eats all his food before you give him his insulin, and then wait to see if he throws up again. If he doesn't, let about 20 minutes go by, then give his insulin. I am just a bit concerned that it could be pancreatitis. Our diabetic dogs are more susceptible to this, and only your Vet can really diagnosis this. If it is, they generally take them off food and water (give water sub-q) for 24-48 hours. But, sometimes they give them a bit of food, very easy to digest. Johanna has quite a bit of experience with this, and can give you more info. Nash, my dog had pancreatitis which then led to diabetes. With a diabetic, it's different then if they aren't because of insulin needs. Then again, maybe he has a little virus, or sinus drainage. I just didn't like that you said his stomach was sore to the touch. When they have pancreatitis, the pancreas is inflamed, and this adds to the discomfort. Just watch him tonight, and I wouldn't force any water or food on him unless you suspect hypo, then do the Karo syrup. Do you home test? I can't remember. Hope I'm not asking too many questions. With Pancreatitis they don't want food at all... I'm concerned about the tummy soreness.. Who is he walking? is he hunching? is there a gurgling sound? What is his bg reading??

Posts: 10014 10/11/09 10:20 PM Administrator	Johanna, Nash still ate with the pancreatitis. He is a glutton and didn't get it. And he was throwing up everywhere, water, and food. So, sometimes they do eat. This of course was all post diabetes. But, he had that one point where I thought he was getting it again because he threw up all his water and was acting like he was sore. I think she's safe tonight if he doesn't throw up again.....but, I'd be checking his bg's and see how he does through the night. I know for a fact that Lucy would continue to try to eat after vomiting- no matter what the diagnosis, and I think some dogs might. I wouldn't base a suspicion of pancreatitis on whether he ate again after vomiting. The tummy soreness is worrisome, I would get him to the vet for labs and fluids regardless. Let us know. and my Lucy, American Pugsley, age 15 -born 4/18/1996, DX. diabetic Nov. 07, blind 2/08, Weight 11 lbs., Humulin N 7 U , Homecooked chicken/white rice with canned Hills W/D My sweet, baby Lucy left me peacefully on October, 24, 2011 with her head on my shoulder and my comforting whispers in her poor little, deaf ear.
