Posts: 262 02/19/12 10:12 AM	Tags : None Maggie was diagnosed with diabetes in the fall 2011. BG always high. Never correct amount of insulin prescribed...thought we were going to loose her Thursday. Skin and bones, weak, high BG. Changed food several times...no luck...made my own version...BG lower and don't know how much insulin to give this morning...please help asap

Also what type of insulin are you using , and how much.. What is Maggie's weight? Please post back with the answers to these questions I just posted so we can get some correct insulin into her this morning, We here at the CSG will take you by the hand and walk you through this process with Maggie.. We have all been in your shoes at one time and were just as frightened, but after you learn all that needs to be learned to care for Maggie you will see canine diabetes is NOT a death sentence. Moderator Posts: 1494 02/19/12 12:06 PM	Welcome to you and Maggie. Johanna asked some good questions and here are a few more: Is Maggie spayed? Is she a heavy coated dog? If so, could the shots not be getting all the way under the skin? Where do you give her shots? From your description, Maggie may be in crisis. Is there a 24 hour vet in your area. It is possible that she is dehydrated and needs IV fluids. Are you giving 2 shots a day, 12 hours apart? We want to help you get this under control. Posts: 262 02/19/12 12:17 PM	Maggie is approx 7 1/2 yrs, weight in Spring 2011 about 126 lbs, last weight 75 lbs. Love vet, but never has gotten insulin to right level. Always in 200s-300s when checked. Had lost 9 lbs from end of Nov to mid Feb...shrinking away fast...always starving...vet slowly increased food, but always hungr Thought she was going to die on Thursday...suprised still alive Fri...still very, very weak...took to vet...told me to watch BG and adjust insulin accordingly. Came home n looked up some infor online.... decided that we followed vet recomdations since dx...now going to try my way..what more can it hurt...watched my dog go blind n just about starve to death. started on homemade food...BG testing lower at feed time...higher 2 hrs later...don't know how much insulin to give...never had numbers this low...no more commercal dog food! Not starving when I fed her what I made. BG151 9:00 am, gave no insulin(didnt know how much...BG 300 11:30 am...gave 20 units need help...dog happier n more satisfied on home made food...don't know how much insulin to give n scared to ask vet anymore...tooooo broke to go to another vet....lots of $$ to get to now...

Moderator Posts: 1494 02/19/12 12:21 PM	OK since you are working on this yourself, here is a rule of thumb. 1/4 to 1/2 unit of insulin per pound of body weight. You are at the very low end of the scale right now. Maggie's insulin can be increased quite a bit, but not all at once. If she is eating and still loosing weight, then she isn't getting enough insulin. If you are giving 20 units now, you might try 22. Try that for 3-5 days, then do a curve if you can. I hope you realize we have to start at the beginning, sadly most vets know next to nothing about treating canine diabetes.. Why did you not give insulin when you had the reading a BG 151 9:00 am, ? That was a good reading ... and if you feed Maggie she MUST have her insulin... Food and insulin work together... that 20 units was a good amount but we need to get you to a place where your giving the SAME amount of insuin almost all the time. She is not regulated that's why she is starving all the time.. When you home cook what are you cooking? Please test her now and post what her reading is... also did she eat? and at what time? Posts: 262 02/19/12 12:56 PM	on thursday...weak shaking...staggering...not normal behavior...laid down on blanket and did not move...did not want touched...vet said she suspected mass on pancreas...blood test ok on Tuesday...would not drink...curled up in a little ball, but kept twitching...would not move or lift head...wouldnt open one eye and light bothered the other...eyes looked recessed and skin under drooping bad...did not know what to do...never monitored sugar very often...never told to...BG 531...gave 18 or 20 units and 2 baby asprin...got her to eat...about an hour later...stumbled out to kitchen, took her out to potty...peed...came in n drank a huge amount of water...back to blanket n didn't move again...watched all night...same in am...checked BG-334 am...gave 20 unit n fed 2c dry food n 3/4 can food n got to drink alittle water...same...about 12 pm or 1pm came out to kitchen wobbly, but wagging tail n alert...took to vet...fur balling out...huge dandruff flakes all over...didnt even feel like her fur...basically told if I am going to check BG often...give more insulin if BG is higher...had bacterial infection in one eye...gave antibiotics...home n got some info online and made some food with what I had n what I could substitute similar item...BG 516 at 9:00 pm...gave 20 units, 2 cups homemade food n 1 c dry food...seemed more satisfied w food n drank n gave her a bowl of ice cubes...loves them...ate them all so gave more...back to acting like herself on Fri am...keep feeding homemade food n hard boiled egg as snack...looks unhealthy, undernourished, but coat feels better...dandruff gone...eyes look better...happy n active...know we need help, but going to decide how to feed now...not going to watch her starve to death if possible.

Posts: 3854 02/19/12 01:12 PM Administrator	You're doing amazing. Don't give up! If she weighed 100 lbs at one point, she should of been on anywhere from 25 to 50 units at each injection. If her body doesn't have enough insulin to do the job, she will continue to be starving and her body will wither away. Insulin is like the door to the cells, if not enough insulin, the doors don't open to let the nourishment in - this is why she is so hungry and losing weight. At 75 lbs now., she would be iin the area of 18 to 38 units, twice a day, if she processes insulin normally, and also this depends on the food she is eating. My dog ate dry kibble, she was 44 lbs, and had about 1.5 cups at each feeding, and was on approx. 12 units of NPH. twice a day. Each dog is an individual, just like people - so good that you are home testing. The best time to test is right before her 12 hr mark. Even with her being at 150, that is a good fasting reading. She will eat, get insulin, and they will go to work together. You are learning! The one thing with the food, is that you have to make sure each meal is EXACTLY the same, fed at the 12 hr mark, and then adjust insulin every couple of days. Glad she is feeling better. If you fed at 9 am and gave insulin then (?) this reading at 1:00 is just four hrs post shot....maybe check her again at the 6 hr mark and post reading, then again at pre shot tonight. Diet is everything here...so if you want to continue to feed part kibble, part homemade, that is fine...just as long as you can continue to do this. Or I guess once you get a handle on this and she is feeling better, you can go back to just kibble, even adding canned food is fine - but you will have to monitor her blood sugar and adjust then. You're doing great! BTW what is her name? Did I miss it?

Posts: 262 02/19/12 01:19 PM	food I made was pretty much this cooked in a very large frying pan...I know I have lots to learn...found a recpe and did what I could with what I had at the moment. 1 1/2 0- 2 lb ground beef 1 can pinto beans 1 cup high fiber oat (hot cereal mix) 4 cups cooked brown rice 1 container low sodium chicken broth 1 cup wheat germ 4 eggs 1/3 bag frozen spinich 1/3 bag frozen broccoli 1/2 tsp salt substitute been giving her 3 cups at feeding time...been giving a hardboiled egg 1x inbetween

BG # was ALWAYS 200s - 300's when tested(rarely tested) on insulin) checked BG @ 11:30 am...300 gave 20 units insulin checked BG @ 1:00 pm...212 BG already much better on food I made than dry food...not going to buy anymore...will learn what else to cook and how to improve...better control I am sooooooo grateful I found this site...you guys have already told me things I didn't know. Thank you...I almost gave up...actually I only took her to vet on Fri cause kids wanted to try anything...thank God she made it through the night and I found some very helpful information...I think we can build her back up and she can enjoy her remaining days healthier.

Posts: 3854 02/19/12 01:42 PM Administrator	Ok, I'm on my way out the door, so...not sure what you should do about the evenng meal and insulin, since you gave it at 11:30 (the insulin). It normally works for 11-12 hrs to bring down blood sugar. Maybe you should try and wait and feed her late this eveing and then give insulin. Others will jump on here and advise. Is this diet going to be one that you can keep her on? I never fed homemade, so I'm kind of clueless here. The thing with kibble and canned dog food - is that it is the same at each meal. Yes stick around, we've all been in your shoes with a newly dx dog and trust me...I knew NOTHING about diabetes when I came on message boards too. I was always afraid I was going to kill my dog. Ha, she lived six long years with diabetes...and everything was pretty normal with her! Food, insuliin, and a set schedule was all we needed!

Posts: 262 02/19/12 01:48 PM	Maggie is her name. she could see when this starte d, but BG always high when checked. did everything vet told me to do...lost her sight soo quickly...vet said cataracs are matured? said dont think she can even see light or dark...i only wished i would have looked for answers sooner...3 kids 13, 9 n 2, kids have issues, 2 dogs, mother, 20 yr marriage was falling apart, health was in jeprody, let alone my mental well being...feel bad n upset w/myself, but doing whatever i can now...that was life then...making improvements every day...

Some dogs go blind, others do not. I think alot of it is genetic. My pooch went blind 6 mts after dx., I tried my darndest...and felt so bad. However, it was done, and I had to let it go and could not afford eye surgery...so we worked on commands and keeping her safe. She was just fine, because she learned to use her nose and her ears to compensate. Yes go shopping! Check back later! Hugs to your Maggie girl!

I am afraid if I dont get her BG down really quick...its going to be too late...she is so grossly malnurished...even stomach area looks sunken in and you can not only feel all of her bones...you can feel the boney shape of her spine...it seems like it just dropped over less than a week...welcome to any ideas or suggestions...thanks
