Posts: 572 11/18/11 12:56 PM	Tags : None Our worse fears has become a reality..DJ has been showing signs of diabetes for the past couple of week..We didn't spot it right away because he didn't really change all that much. He's always been a big eater, but he started drinking more water than usual. We have always checked his blood every couple of months ever since we got him. The last time we checked it in Sept. it was 98.. I checked it Wed. morning it was 383, we tried to get him into the Vet. but the earliest they could take him was yesterday morning. I checked it Wed. evening it was 423. That was fasting for about 6 hours..Anyway we got him in yesterday. They did complete blood work. Everything seems to be ok..They put him on 6 units of insulin twice a day, for a week to see how he does, then we'll take it from there..Oh yeah, and a diet and plenty of exercise, which he already gets plenty of. We walk 2 or 3 times a day and Panda keeps him moving all the time..So everybody wish us luck.

Posts: 3854 11/18/11 04:00 PM Administrator	Well, I'll BE!!! Ed you know that this isn't the greatest news to hear, but it could of been a whole lot worse, right? Diabetes is so workable and DJ will do just fine. How much does DJ weight? And what insulin was he put on? Also, what are you feeding? Have you checked his BS since being on the 6 units? Hoping it's making a dent in his blood sugar.

Posts: 572 11/18/11 06:28 PM	Well Jody, it's out of our hands. We took him to the shelter, we didn't tell them he has diabetes, hoping someone will adopt him and take care of him..WOW! Boy is my ears burning. lmao...Bet you were ready to kill me, huh? That's how we got Snoopy. They said they didn't know he had diabetes. They would have had to be totally stupid not to see it..I could do some horrible things to people who would do that. No, we haven't checked it yet. The vet. said it really wouldn't tell us anything for a couple of days on the insulin. Supposed to check it tomorrow and call her. We've had him on Blue Buffalo, Fish and sweet potato for the past 2 or 3 months. We put them on it when he was having the bad skin condition, before I found out it was the Frontline plus causing it. They like it so well and their skin and coat looks so much better we decided to keep them on it. The vet said to leave him on it at least for now, didn't want to make any drastic changes. And I have yet to have a dog that would eat that Hill's science diet. He's on Humulin N insulin. He weighs 30 pounds. We've tried everything to get him to lose weight. He only eats about a cup and half of food a day, and the only treats they get is a few green beans or a little bit of oatmeal, and plenty of exercise, so I don't know how we can take the weigh off. Heaven knows we've been trying all Summer.

You are in just the right place at just the right time! We can help you with any problems, and I am only about 2 hours away, so if you need anything, just let me know. This whole board was founded on all of us having diabetic dogs at one time or another. I know you aren't going ballistic like most of us did when we got the diagnosis, and that is good. Sissy, a 15 1/2 year old lhasa apso left for the Rainbow Bridge on February 28, 2009. She was diagnosed on September 21, 2007. You can run and your eyes are clear, my girl. On March 8, 2009, we adopted Fritz, a Bichon Frise puppy. He is a rescue dog with a beautiful spirit.

It's not the end of the world for us or our pets, just another disease that we can win over. Posts: 3854 11/18/11 09:55 PM Administrator	Ed, I didn't believe YOU for a minute. You're not one of THEM by a long shot. Yes, so many people abandon their animals when stuff like this happens, as you well know with your Snoopy! Makes one wonder, doesn't it? DJ will be just fine. I wouldn't do a food switch at all. I've heard really good things about the Blue Buffalo food. You just have to find an amt of insulin that works with it, and his system. 30 lbs., so a starting point of insulin (most dogs) is 1/4 of their weight in units, so we are looking at around 7.5 units twice a day, and up to 15 units. Your vet is doing well starting him at 6. Has his thyroid been checked? Taffy was heavy too, but I was feeding a crappy food (pedigree!) she was a 59 lb cocker/brittany. We went on a mission for a better food, added no salt green beans to her diet and less food, more exercise and she did lose some weight....got down to 44 lbs., then walla diabetes hit. I was so mad. Oh well...we dealt with it and I didn't take her to the shelter! LOL

Posts: 572 11/18/11 10:14 PM	Lol, didn't fool you at all? I probably should delete that, some people may just read that far and decide to hate me..You're right. The vet. said she was starting him on a little lower dosage than she thought he would need but she wanted to try it and see if it would work. I'm giving them both green beans for their treats. They love them. I use the frozen kind and just steam them a little bit. Yeah we've had his thyroid checked a couple of times since we've had him, checked out ok..I think his hormones got messed up when they neutered him, just a week before we got him. He wasn't overweight then but started gaining within a short time. And also the crappy food we were feeding him (Pedigree) here too. Well gotta go..Wishing you all a good night.

Posts: 3854 11/19/11 07:09 AM Administrator	Taffy loved veggie's too Ed. I had no idea and after diabetes, we gave them for treats. Raw green beans were her fav. One year we had an abundant crop in our little garden. Taf was right beside me as if thinking: "One for you, one for me". You're doing your dogs a great favor by offering them veggies vs dog treats. Another reason why Taffy was over weight! Live and Learn. I have a young foster puppy, and she loves any raw veggie! Starting Millie out early! See...I am learning!

I was giving them mixed veggies but then i read that too much broccoli is not good for them so now i just give them green beans, carrots, and that sort of stuff. They like oatmeal too and it's high in fiber so it should be good for DJ..I think we caught it in time to help him. Yep, live and learn.

LOL I'm sure you know to not give DJ carrots now because of the nat'l sugar in them. The rest of the veggie family is fine. Never heard that about broccoli, but I only gave sprigs of it anyway. Taffy had her own container in the frig door with her cut up veggies for treats. When she got used to the routine she would sit right beside the frig door, thinkng everytime it opened, she deserved a treat! In her older years, we obliged!

He was dx'd with diabetes in November 2007 and is currently on 9 units of Novelin N twice a day. Nash went blind approximately 6 mnths after dx, has glaucoma and gets eye drops 5x day

If everybody did everything they're supposed to do there would be nothing for the mods. to do and you would be out of a job.lol Thank you Glenda for the welcome. Don't we wish there was NO such club tho.? Ok, checked his blood this morning for the first time since he's been on insulin..It was 195 about 2 1/2 hours after he ate and had his shot. I'm having a heck of a time getting enough blood to test. I use a Bayer Contour tester, only takes a pinpoint blood and I have trouble getting that much..I've tried near the base of his tail, that's where I always got it on Snoopy. I've tried all over both ears. I tried massaging them, and hot cloths, nothing works..I finally got enough near the very tip of his right ear this morning. He doesn't seem to feel it when I stick him but it sure hurts me..Any ideas? Edited to add..I might have found one reason. I was using the ultra fine lancet that I use on myself. I some times have a problem getting blood too. I just ordered some 26 gauge, made for dogs. Maybe that will help. Last Edited By: not2foxie 11/20/11 02:47 PM. Edited 1 time.

Nash had a couple warty looking things (they are actually sebaceous glands) that we used and could always get blood from them. Hope the new lancers make it easier! Probably have saved a lot of people a lot of grief. I know what we went through with Snoopy, but that was a losing battle from the beginning, because it was well established and a lot of the damage had already been done. With DJ we caught it in time, so if we can get his weight off we may just have a chance..We don't give up on a pet until I'm digging the hole.

Posts: 301 11/21/11 09:21 PM	Ed, if he's okay with getting blood, we get Buddy's from his lip. I have the lancelet set on 2 and usually get a good amount and he's never flinched. As long as he's alright with you being around his mouth area. I used to get them from his callouses, but because they got infected once, I just thought it was best not to dance with that devil! With DJ I know there would be plenty of blood if I tried to take it from his lip, but I would much rather use HIS blood. lol..I'm just hoping that the bigger lancets will work ok..I didn't have any problems at all with Snoopy. I could get blood just about anyplace I stuck him but DJ seems to have very little blood near the surface..
