I've been thinking about the possibility of having to move back to Hawaii and how I'm going to bring Jerry with me. The airlines don't allow you to bring your dog into the cabin when flying to Hawaii, they all go in cargo. I don't think I could do that with her, not just because of her diabetes but also because she has anxiety issues. The only exceptions they make though are for guide/service/therapy dogs. I did find a company that will fly to Hawaii and let your dog be with you in the cabin and even sitting in their own seat instead of in a crate. The only problem is that it costs thousands of dollars! It's called DogTravel, and they will fly anywhere in the country but they only fly as often as their members demand it. So it might be difficult getting a flight for when I need it, especially with the strict laws about the quarantine period. This won't be happening anytime soon, but I was just curious if anyone has any suggestions.

Administrator Posts: 7346 06/05/11 01:12 PM Administrator & Owner	If your thinking of moving back you should look into Hawaii's quarantine regulations .. Hawaii - In general, pets must be in quarantine for 5-120 days. A new program recently began , called the 5-Day-Or-Less Program, allows for short quarantines of up to 5 days if a host of requirements are met. Please note that it takes at least 120 days before entry into Hawaii to meet the requirements. For more information click here.

Moderator Posts: 1494 06/05/11 07:15 PM	There are airlines that just fly pets - like PetAir. The diabetes could be an issue, so you might want to check. Sissy, a 15 1/2 year old lhasa apso left for the Rainbow Bridge on February 28, 2009. She was diagnosed on September 21, 2007. You can run and your eyes are clear, my girl. On March 8, 2009, we adopted Fritz, a Bichon Frise puppy. He is a rescue dog with a beautiful spirit.

Cindy and Nash Nash was born 9/2/1998, and is my sweet 1/2 breed Cocker Spaniel/English Springer Spaniel. He was dx'd with diabetes in November 2007 and is currently on 9 units of Novelin N twice a day. Nash went blind approximately 6 mnths after dx, has glaucoma and gets eye drops 5x day

Posts: 451 06/05/11 08:42 PM	Not if she's going to be flying in cargo, it's not a good idea to sedate them when they're unsupervised. She's just a very nervous/scared dog, any loud noises/strange people/situations scare her. That's why she never poops when I walk her, she's just too hypersensitive of every little thing. If she was down in cargo I'm not sure she'd survive the trip.

I have a friend who has had several dogs that are therapy dogs and she said it's very easy to get certified. Then you can tell them you are taking her to Hawaii for do hospital visits or whatever. I'd look into and start asking right away. I have two friends who fly for Delta. Don't know if they go to Hawalii, but I can ask them what they know if you want. Posts: 451 06/06/11 10:14 PM	Hmm, I'm not sure she would pass. Somehow I don't think a dog that freaks out with any loud sound and is nervous around strangers would pass certification for therapy. But good suggestion otherwise! A friend of mine said that a lot of people get a doctor or shrink to write a letter saying their dog is their emotional support so they have to fly with them. Unfortunately I don't know a doctor or shrink to write me a letter. My co-worker knows a couple people who are pilots and fly those small charter planes...only thing is I'm a bit scared to fly such a long way in one of those things. Too many stories of those small planes crashing and everyone on board dying.

Posts: 451 06/21/11 07:41 PM	Well I found out that Hawaii doesn't recognize "emotional support" animals, so they don't allow them to fly in the cabin. Only legitimate service animals (like seeing eye dogs). They are very strict. This isn't something I need to do in the immediate future, so when I start seriously thinking about moving back I guess I'll figure something out. One possibility is I can give Jerry some Xanax so she won't be so anxious and she can fly in cargo, but she won't be sedated.

I know of someone who just flew from the upper East Coast to South Carolina with her dog under the seat. She said it was fine.
