Posts: 3 01/19/11 10:48 PM	Tags : dog, diabetic Hello I have a 8 year old rotti-husky mix. She was dx about 2 years ago with diabetes and about a month ago with hypothyroidism. She had cataract surgery 2 weeks ago. haylees glucose was 651tonight one hour after eating. Does anyone have any suggestions on food or anything that could help? During the morning 1 hour after eating glucose has been in the low 300. She gets 1 1/4 cups of taste of the wild twice a day.This is being on 24 units of insulin. should she eat more during the day? We had to cut the insulin a month ago because she was on 32 units and her glucose dropped to 33. we tested her cortisol which was low at 1.6 and the creatinine 104.9. Tomorrow i'm doing a curve. Any suggestions would be helpful. thanks, nicole & haylee

Posts: 1994 01/20/11 07:47 AM	Welcome to our board!!! I have a Siberian Husky ( 12 years old) that is diabetic. She is on Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream. She is 62 lbs and on 3/4 c 2 x a day. She is not very active so this amount is good for her,And she is maintaining her figure and weight!!! Anyway could you share what your vet says about the low cortisol. Is he thinking that more tests are in order. Also has your vet done a urine culture to rule out a Urinary Track Infection? An infection can definitely make the bg's high

Moderator Posts: 2167 01/20/11 11:20 PM	I'm curious when you dropped her dose from 32 to 24 Units? How long ago was that? (sorry, I just saw that it was one month ago) That seems like a pretty drastic drop in dose for a one time low reading of 33. There are many factors that could have contributed to a low reading and usually the dog's body will adjust itself and no changes are needed in the dose. Please confirm that the reading of 33 was a one time thing, or were you getting consistently low numbers. If we know the history of insulin dose, sometimes we can figure things out better. I'm wondering if you need to just start a gradual adjustment to her dose bringing her back up to get those numbers down. Also, the reading you had of 651- a one time thing? I'll be looking to see how your curve comes out.
