Okay... this post was made before the final pricing of Kanivet/misitinib was released to clients.
I was completely wrong in the pricing.
The pricing is actually double what I wrote below.
A large dog (70 lbs) would require a daily dose of 400mg of Kanivet.
The cost per month for a dog of this body weight is $1,300.00, dispensed twice a month.
This does not include lab fees and exam charges--which will bring the initial monthly cost to possibly over $1,500.00 to $1,700.00 per month (for the first several months). The lab requirements tape off after three months to bi-monthly.
If you break down the drug cost per miligram wise--it comes to over 98k per pound.
I have since consulted with a biochemist acquaintance, who informs me that there is not way that this drug is costing AB science even a 1/4 of this amount to produce--he estimates that the actual cost to produce and compound the drug into a pill form is less than $50.00 dollars per pound. Misitinib is also produced by several pharma companies in China, whom I suspect is manufacturing the base (misitinib) component of the drug--and it is then shipped off the AB Science in the USA where is is compounded with other buffering agents into pill form.
This is an outrage.
And I know full well this argument that is used... "the drug companies have to realize their investment!" Well this is baloney. Boeing and car manufacturers have nearly the same development/liability costs as the drug companies--and you do not see them charging a trillion dollars a copy for the first 767's that come off the line (to recoup their costs) or 6 million bills for a Ford Focus (again to recoup their costs).
AB Science is price gouging AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF HUMAN SUFFERING!
I have since learned that out of the large study group that my dog participated in--only a handful of clients have elected to continue on with the Kanivet. It is just too costly--unless that is you are Bill Gates or George Sorros and money means nothing to you.
A top LA based DVM surgeon gave me the complete low-down on Kanivet. It is not a cure. It only works in 60% of animals--which is slightly better than a coin toss. My dog had a MCT tumor pop up right in the middle of full-dose trials... then three more right on the final week of my supply. It does not work better than Palladia--but it has less affect upon your animals gastric tract than Palladia... and that's it.
In short--it is not cost effective.
Kanivet has landed with a resounding thud! (as told to me by a drug rep). Yes there are thousands of clients using this substance. Only 2 out of 100 people in need can afford this stuff. There is a massive demand, but an inability to use it because of financial hardship. With a potential market numbering into the millions in North America alone, you would think AB science would have the brains to market this drug to be accessable.
Nope. There are no rocket scientists at AB Science... nor Pfizer (who makes Palladia which is also cost prohibitive).
Please see the Neoplasene thread that I recently posted as an alternative to Kanivet.
ORIGINAL POST....
Some of you know of my problems with my large Shepherd--and that this sweet pooch came down with mast-cell cancer (skin tumors) last summer. To say the least we have been through the wringer with this dog, and I am not going to say how much we have spent (lousy vets, vets that operate on comission, needless procedures and outdated procedures and so on) until I arrived at the numero uno cancer veterinariany specialist (whom if I discovered in the first place would have saved my dog and the wife and I a load of dough).
Anyways my Shephard has been on an experimental drug called "misitinib" made by AB Sciences in Philly. We've been getting the stuff for about 150 bills for a three month supply during this study (which I had hoped would last another year or so). But today my vet-tech called me and let me know that the FDA approved misitinib for general veterinary use.... and she also informed me on what AB science is now charging for this drug called "Masivet" in Europe where it is approved already.
The price is now over $1000.00 dollars per month --taken daily at 400mg per day.
We went with this stuff because of it low side-effects, compared to Phizer's drug called Palladia (which is taken 3 times a week and has a greater chance of intestinal side-effects).
So I had to inform our sweet-heart vet-tech that we would not be able to afford this medication. But it turns out that Palladia costs the same amount as the misitinib as the clinical trial costs--so we are going to switch over to the Phizer drub when our stash runs out.
SO THANK YOU AB SCIENCE!! YOU ARE CHISELING, SCUM SUCKING BAGS OF FILTH!!!
Had it ever occured to you that you have a superior treatment for mast-cell tumors--and that if you priced it to compete with Palladia (the Phizer drug) you would corner the market?!!
Nooooooooo!
This is not the way MBA's think!!
NOOOOOOOOOOO!
The way the MBA of these days think is how much can we squeeze out of everyone.
Well let me tell you something (you chiseling pieces of dreck!), I was informed by our sweet-heart vet tech that each and everyone of their clients currently using misitinib (Masivet) during this clinical study is dropping off the drug. Not one, even in this affluent area which the veterinary clinic is located is continuing with it. Not one!
Yup!! THAT'S RIGHT--YOU READ ME CORRECTLY!!!
Your just priced your product so that only 2 out of 100 people can affoard this drug for their animals. You just priced yourselves out of a vast, vast veterinary cancer market. Perhapst Bill Gates or George Sorros are dog lover--you'll make a bundle off of these guys!!
THANK YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH YOU CHISELING PIECES OF DRECK!!
Now perhaps if this drug was approved for human use--you could squeeze this much out of people (but it is not approved for this yet). Perhaps you could get the insurance companies to fork this amount over.
And so I have been doing some research on misitinib (Masivet) and if am not mistaken it is being produced by several pharmicological (sp?) manufacturing companies in China--and since you at AB Science (chiseling scum) are most likely having it made there (correct me if I am wrong), how could this possibly cost this much? I know full well how much anything that is produced in China costs--their cost are less than 1/10th of what things cost in the states to produce.
What are you marking it up? 2000% 3000% Just how much.
This stuff nearly costs its weight in gold (almost).
And maybe I am wrong, but it may cost more than its weight in gold.
Sooooooo, thank you so very, very much AB Science for inventing a product which practically nobody can afford--especially in this depression we are heading into.
We dog owners really appreciate your efforts to chisel and grind us.
