Posts: 68 09/11/10 09:01 PM Animal Behaviorist	Tags : None I finally caved in and got Gulliver desexed. All my knowledge and experience has told me to do this a very long time ago but I was praying for a miracle and Gulliver would have been better by now with his perianal fistula. His pedigree was perfect for breeding (one would have hoped). I got him done last wednesday-4 days ago and I held his testicle area to see if there was any soreness left or anything unusual- then I realized, I didn't know if they take out his 'balls' or not. I feel so silly asking. He has what seems to be the same 'stuff' down there. He wasn't supposed to I thought. Can any one help? remember I am not a vet just a behaviourologist...

Posts: 10009 09/11/10 09:14 PM Administrator	Okay it's been almost 12 years, but Nash was neutered and they remove them. Completely, but there are little kind of sac's (loose skin) from where they were. Maybe he is just really swollen. Does he seem in pain? Nash was my first male. Anyone else with males that can help. Dr. Lee is visiting family and will be on and off all weekend, but I'll notify him of your question. Cindy and Nash Nash was born 9/2/1998, and is my sweet 1/2 breed Cocker Spaniel/English Springer Spaniel. He was dx'd with diabetes in November 2007 and is currently on 9 units of Novelin N twice a day. Nash went blind approximately 6 mnths after dx, has glaucoma and gets eye drops 5x day

Vasectomy is rare to be done in dogs as it does not alter the hormones. The testosterone reduction is one of the primary benefits sought by neutering. When you neuter an adult male dog, because the vasculature is more pronounced, there will often be more swelling and sometimes hematoma formation that will make it seem like he has the same "stuff" down there. Also the scrotum is not taken as that is a much longer surgery - too much blood supply. So in adult dogs, it will hang down. In younger dogs, the scrotum has not developed to the same degree so will not sag. It takes about 2-4 weeks for the testosterone levels to subside. It is possible to still get a dog pregnant for up to 16 days after neutering - so chaperone all dates! Hope that helps.

Posts: 68 09/12/10 06:37 PM Animal Behaviorist	It helps a lot, thank you. He is doing well - he is spoiled rotten, very vocal when he hurts. He still is what I call 'hugging the tiles" which means he gets up and moves to a cooler spot to cool down his body. (or heat it) He is on Metrondiazole 400mg 2xdaily. Cephalexin 900mg 2xdaily, Atopica 100 mg once daily-2xdaily starting tomorrow, Carprofen 100 mg once daily- all with food. He eats Eukanuba German Shepard food and I am giving him yogurt with L.S.A. (ground flax seed /linseed & almonds) with his tablets to make sure he has something in it..and for his immune system. Otherwise I give him fresh apples, arrowroot cookies, cooked potatoes, sweet potato, chicken an lamb liver treats..unflavored chewies-knots whatever you call them if he has anything different he gets worse- the perianal fistulas do anyway. This problem is so hard to deal with. thank you for your input, it helps me a lot, ah stress.. Kathy
