Moderator Posts: 1494 09/11/10 06:34 PM	Tags : None Hi Kathy - I'm back. I have been trying to ignore this, but Fritz has gone from no accidents for months to peeing on the floor once or twice a day. I take him out the same as always and he isn't drinking a lot of water, but I keep finding these pee spots. They aren't very big. This started on Wednesday. We have been leaving him out in the house while we are gone for weeks with no problems. On Wednesday, we got a call from our campground that a large tree had deposited itself right in the middle of our travel trailer due to wind. So my husband went down there for the day to try to salvage stuff. I on the other hand left at 9:00 to take my son to his doctor about 80 miles away then to the BMV to get his license reinstated due to medical reasons. Then I had one stop to make and didn't get home until 5:00. There was no one to let Fritz out, and he had peed on the floor when I got home. I cleaned it up and didn't say anything. Now I am finding pee spots with increasing frequency. His food is the same as always, and there is no blood in the pee. He is itching horribly due to seasonal (we hope) allergies and he is getting Zyrtec 2X a day. I don't know if the Zyrtec is doing it or if he got away with it once, he thinks he can keep doing it? What advice to you give for dogs that regress on their potty training? Thanks. Sissy, a 15 1/2 year old lhasa apso left for the Rainbow Bridge on February 28, 2009. There are a couple of good reasons why Fritz peed in the first place- one he just had to go and there may have been a little bit of anxiety which made him 'mark'. Cleaning it up with a bleach/non ammonia cleaner is the best thing to do. Check the bottles for one that will not harm your floors or fabrics. When he has access to a big home they often feel that unused rooms are fair game for peeing and pooing if left alone. btw you've done the right thing behavior wise. ignoring will not give him positive reinforcement for whatever was going on in his head when he peed. I am worried because all of the symptoms you wrote about remind me of Tut and his long term undiagnosed thyroid problems- right down to the itchy skin. Peeing wasn't so much of an issue but that can be a symptom in relation to fungal problem thyroid patients get with skin. -it gets complex. I suggest you get his bloods tested and especially look at the thyroid. You may have to do this more than once. Also try asking what you can do to check him for a urinary tract infection, bacterial and fungal. I had one female client who was on the edge of giving birth, she was peeing everywhere- drove me crazy. I was going nuts thinking she was in labor. It was cystitis, one course of antibiotic, all was well. Let me know, love Kathy

I figured, it out...GOTT'A PUT PLASTIC, she doesn't pee on the couch, cuz...she doesn't like the [PLASTIC]\figured it out, IT WAS THE 'smell, and material'...I THINK? Hmmm??? Anyways, I figured it out, on my end...GOOD LUCK...'Jerri' ...with your pet... boy...IT IS WORK! BUT... We do love our pets

Moderator Posts: 1494 09/13/10 07:52 PM	Thank you Kathy. I immediately read up on thyroid problems. He doesn't match any of the other symptoms. He is not lethargic (really!), he eats like a horse, he isn't losing weight and his skin isn't flaking. I think it is just late summer allergies, but I will have the vet test him for thyroid issues. Bichons - well, all light skinned dogs are notorius for allergic reactions to things. The only way to find a flea on a bichon is to wet them down and then start moving the hair around! I haven't found any fleas, but bichons are particularly allergic to flea bites. I also gave him a bath and that seems to help some. I will keep you posted. If you are following your routine of outside time for the dogs relief, it may be that your dog is laying claim to objects. You will note that dogs always pee over the same spot other dogs have used previously. Frustrates me at "show time" when our girls are in perfect shape for the ring and our Cory cannot stop from laying claim to the girls. At such times, a belly belt is a must.... Have missed you ladies but not by choice. The clever gremlins attempted to do me in...but I declared victory and am still around.

Posts: 975 09/15/10 07:57 AM	MyGully....What is your opinion of using a belly belt? I dislike them immensely but have had to use them on occasion. They do prevent leg lifting.

Jerri, Tut was never lethargic or gave any other symptoms other than what we wrote previously, skin allergies ( I suppose this is immune system related,) had smelly fungal attacks, (they told me he was just getting old , BS) overweight even though he was on a strict diet. otherwise he was just fine until the last couple of years-- I am going to cry now...

Remove Pet Odors From Carpets Pet odors can be a very unpleasant “side benefit” of pet ownership… While it’s true that Fido is your best friend, his doggie dander shedding hair and occasional “accidents” can make him hard to live with. Whether its Fido or Felix the cat, pet odors can turn your home from a sanctuary into a smelly cesspool faster than you can say Jack Rabbit. What to do? First, forget the ammonia, forget the Clorox, forget the Mr. Clean and all the other products for general home cleaning. Just don’t waste your time. Sure you can remove dog pee from the kitchen floor with a regular kitchen floor cleaner… but it won’t do the one thing that will change the situation: remove the smell so even your pets cannot smell it. See, pets go where they smell it is “okay” to go… and if that upstairs hall closet was previously a “watering spot” even for an animal who lived in the house before your time… Felix and Fido will not only know it, they’ll show you they know it by using the same spot themselves… So before you get too hot and bothered at your pet, realize that it could be a natural response to an existing problem that is outside” your olfactory abilities to perceive. Now what to do about it? Start smart and finish fast: use a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution in a spray bottle and thoroughly saturate the area. Let stand. After at least 30 minutes, spray again, and then spread a paste of baking soda and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide over the area and let stand until dry. This may take overnight. Vacuum when dry. Sodium percarbonate (dry hydrogen peroxide) can also work to help eliminate the residual odor. It is sold as oxobrite; oxyclean or pick it up at the chemicalstore.com in 2 pound buckets for about 4 dollars each plus shipping. Use it as a paste and allow to dry. For serious persistent odors, you may need to get an odor neutralizing product to apply after the cleaning is all done. Look for products which contain zeolite powder or pick up some zeolite granules. You may want to place a sachet of zeolite crystals in the area (particularly if its a closet or small enclosed space. This will remove residual odors long term and can be placed in sunlight every so often to recharge its odor “sucking” power. One thing to remember… if your pet is “going” in the house… there is usually a reason: either old odors are attracting it; or there are other stresses upsetting the animal or, it is possible there is a medical problem that your vet can help you resolve. But in most cases, it’s simply a matter of the nose knows.. and since our pets can detect odors much more subtle than those we perceive, your best bet is to neutralize all pet odors in the home and any areas where your pet seems prone to want to “go” indoors. Can’t smell it.. how do I find it? Use a black light. Works great!

I noticed that he pees mostly in the bedroom, so I am keeping the door closed. I have been taking him out an extra time before we leave to go some place so that may be helping. His itching has subsided somewhat and he is sleeping better. I suppose it could be stress - who knows. I haven't found any pee spots for a couple of days now. Last night, he jumped off the bed during the night, got his aluminum water bowl, and brought it up on the bed. I slept through all of this until he pushed it off on the floor with a loud clank. Posts: 68 09/20/10 02:32 AM Animal Behaviorist	LOL Jerri, Gulliver knows that trick, he slides his aluminum water pan across the floor to get us to give him water too. Don't you just love the 3am calls? Davis, are belly bands the bands they use for 'outies?' protruding belly buttons? I don't mind them but I never knew they could prevent leg lifting. The thought of puppies has me all clucky now. Oh found a new cleaner and it sound as if it is here that look like small white towels. Yo can soak all whites in them and now they have a formula for colored clothes. It is great- takes out most stains. And now I use it for marking- I make solution of Napisan and water and pour it onto the corner where my dog lifts his leg- on brick stone cement anywhere that bothers me. It has worked a treat so far (Aussie jargon sorry). I wouldn't put it at the base of your best roses though!

When he pees outside, I almost fall all over him with praise - good boy, Fritz, good pee, etc. I did add the extra time to go out before we leave. It may only have been an hour, but out he goes.
