Posts: 1994 08/22/10 06:39 AM	Tags : None Dr Lee, Jasmine is a 12 year old 65# Husky. She was losing her appetite a week before her dental. Her dental was 8/18/10. Anyway she had a molar on side pulled and other molar was hanging on with one root,tissue missing and he could drain all of the stuff in that tooth It would run out her nostril( I think he packed it with consil) This was the worse infected tooth. The other molar was not as bad but infected as well.The tooth behind the molar was loose so he pulled that and a front tooth as well . She came home the same day and had bloody mucous discharge coming out of her nose, She was given Flagyl , Rimadyl ( for 4 days) and Tramadol for pain Rimadyl and Flagyl ended Sat She had a mini profile done 2 weeks prior to the dental BUN was normal ALP was 191 ( went down from last month). T-Pro was 7.7, ALT was 96 ans CRE was 1.7, This was all done in house She has finished her Rimadyl yesterday morning as well as the Flagyl that she given 2 days before and 3 days after dental I am starting to worry. Yes she did ave a pretty big procedure But I don't understand. I gave her the same food as before just ground up. I have tried cottage cheese, parmesan cheese,chicken broth and chicken. Nothing is working to tempt her.. Is this normal for a dog to be not interested? I have a feeling that the vet will blood work next week, I just wish she would eat. Also is there a drug that would positively effect her eating. BTW Jasmine is alert,howling and seems to look OK I am going to check her temp in a few minutes .

Posts: 57 08/22/10 11:09 AM	I think a recheck with your veterinarian is in order. We need to make sure that there is not another cause of appetite loss other than dental disease. After 4 days, we should be eating more, not less - especially since she is on pain medications. With the nasal discharge - was that occurring before the dental? Typically the canine teeth (eye tooth or fangs) are the most common to be associated with nasal discharge and bleeding. Molars and premolars could do this but you may want to touch base with your veterinarian to make sure that a disease in the nasal cavity is not present. While blood work recheck is an excellent idea, I think that we may want to take some survey radiographs (X-Rays). At this point, other than perhaps adding on another antibiotic, I am not sure if appetite stimulation medications will be recommended by your veterinarian at this point or not. I think we need to look to see why she is not eating. If her appetite was just low or she was only eating treats, I would be less concerned. But if she is not interested in the chicken/chicken broth/cheese mixture, then we need to see your vet. Please let us know how your visit goes and let me know if there is anything else we can do.

Posts: 1994 08/22/10 08:13 PM	Thanks Dr Lee. The nasal discharge was only after the procedure for about 12 hours. The molar was so infected and had such a wide hole that Dr Burke flushed it. As he puts it " It stunk". The mucousy blood mixture stopped the following day. Two days ago I brought her for a recheck. The teeth look good. The sutures are in tact. Gums are pink. Lymph nodes are good. And there is no discharge out of the nose. Dr Burke said that if her appetite still is bad Monday that he wants to see her. Possibly put her on Clindamycin I think.And Clindamycin could upset her stomach. He said that this was a really big procedure for her and thinks that it is her teeth. He wants me to continue the Tramadol through the weekend.I am assuming he will then do a complete chem profile if she doesn't show improvement. Jasmines last full chem was in April of this year, Update: Jasmine ate this evening. Not too crazy about her ground up kibble but ate her 1/2 can of Merrick along with her chicken. I added Romano cheese!! That's Italian!!! She loved it. I do think she was picking up that I was stressing. I kicked back and didn't watch her eat. I peaked though. She is to eat soft foods for 10 days. I hope I make it till day 10. Dr Lee what is a survey X ray ?Are you talking about an X ray of her teeth and whole mouth? Is there a possibility that the Rimadyl upset her stomach?
