Posts: 178 07/23/10 06:15 PM	Tags : None Heals? Orrrr Heels? You know what I mean? So... I'm walking 'Coupe' and things are pretty good. But... Every so often, she'll nip at my heals, and I pull her away, and scold her for it, but... Well, she keeps doing this...why? I don't 'get it' Any help? What is the 'right thing to do?' I don't like scolding her...Does this make me a bad puppy mom?

Posts: 975 07/24/10 02:17 AM	What kind of lead do you have her on..? We start our pugs out with a choke lead under the chin, high on the neck and this gives you complete control. Walk her by your side and if she balks, give a short jerk to remind her that you are in charge. If she learns control, you are in trouble. Once she startss moving, keep her moving until you are finished yourself...not when she wants to quit.

Moderator Posts: 1494 07/25/10 06:17 PM	Fritz will sometimes nip at my feet when I walk in the house. As soon as he does, I turn around and walk right toward him, forcing him to back up. I say no when I do this. I works - at least for that time. Sissy, a 15 1/2 year old lhasa apso left for the Rainbow Bridge on February 28, 2009. She was diagnosed on September 21, 2007. You can run and your eyes are clear, my girl. On March 8, 2009, we adopted Fritz, a Bichon Frise puppy. He is a rescue dog with a beautiful spirit.

Administrator Moderator Posts: 3887 07/27/10 07:56 PM	It doesn't make you a bad puppy mommy it make you a loving puppy mommy. Ruby would do this to hubby and me. I would just stop walking and ignore her. When she stop I would put he into a sit positon and we would start to walk again. No words of scolding just ignored her. When she would sit I would praise her. Now hubby will not listen to me and he keeps say Ruby stop that and pushing her away. What I can't get him to understand is this is now a game to her. Dawn

Posts: 68 07/28/10 04:20 AM Animal Behaviorist	I have just had a look,I can not find out what breed you have. I see you have an African Grey Parrot- I dream of having one of them. But as far as dogs go???????? This will be half your answer, herding dogs will nip heels to urge on their sheep, cows or humans. It is deeply instilled into them. The other answer is that you dog may be fear biting. This is when they wait for you to turn and walk away and then hav e a "go" at you. let me know your dog's breed! love Kathy

Posts: 975 07/28/10 05:31 PM	Marianne...I agree with your post. Do not know the age of the dog but puppies love to nip and pretend to bite. I was thinking of when walking a dog with my reply. Too many people walk the dog and let him/her lead the way. Like your answer better than my own....
