Posts: 263 06/04/10 01:42 AM	Tags : None I am trying to find the perfect food for teddy, he is VERY fussy. Previously he has been eating bakers complete which I know most of you will gasp in horror at, it's the only food he will eat, the low fat small bite one. We have previously tried all the higher quality complete foods without success. Anyway, vet recently told me that it's the canine equivalent of mcdonalds so we tried Royal canin, very pricey but supposed to be brilliant and has a palatability guarantee, but after 2 weeks of trying to get him to eat it it's obviously not going to happen. He's now taken to eating Leos food, which is Royal canine Junior, as it'a pup food it's probably far too high in protein & fat for teddy, who is neutered and has a tendency to put on weight if he eats too much. Does anyone know of a healthy, nutritious food that a very fussy dog will like?

Posts: 10009 06/05/10 09:39 AM Administrator	Well, our biggest problem at least for me, in recommending something is that I'm here in the US, and you in the UK. Do you have Wellness brand? It's an excellent food, am using it with my new puppy, but it has different life stages, so I am sure something for Teddy. I've been using Lamaderm by Natural Life for Nash, it's grain free, and it is sold a quite a few pet stores, but is also available at Walmart believe it or not. I'm probably not helping. I know a lot of times the stuff sold in Canada is also sold in the UK, so hopefully the gals in Canada can help. He was dx'd with diabetes in November 2007 and is currently on 9 units of Novelin N twice a day. Nash went blind approximately 6 mnths after dx, has glaucoma and gets eye drops 5x day

Posts: 263 06/05/10 09:54 AM	Over here we have Hills nature's best, hills science plan, Iams, James wellbeloved, Prp plan, Royal Canin,beta complete..these are all high end balanced nutritional completes with different types for different breeds and life stages, but Teddy is so fussy and they are all a bit expensive to try and end up throwing away. The Royal canin claims to be palatable to even the fussiest dog..but not my Teddy. I wonder if anyone from U.k on this forum has had the same problem?

I think Marianne used ProPlan......Also, most of our foods are guaranteed, meaning you can take it back if your dog won't eat it (within a certain time frame) and get your money back, or at least store credit. Posts: 263 06/05/10 12:45 PM	Yes you can do that with Royal canin, I bought it from the vets so will be returning it next week. Teddy is not a pup tho he's 5 yrs old and neutered, do you think it will harm him if he eats Leo's puppy food? It's awkward as Leo needs to be fed 4 times a day, and Ted is used to having a bowl of dry complete out all day. He just ignores the royal canin and eats the puppy food, I've tried mixing it with his old food but he just picks out the Bakers and leaves the new stuff, I've tried hand feeding it to him but he just turns his nose up!

Thing is, it generally has more calories, and more protein and more fat then regular food, so you may see Teddy putting on weight. How come you're feeding Leo 4 times a day? Is that what the breeder recommended? I have Claire on two times a day. AM and PM. I couldn't do the 3 times a day unless I did bedtime and I don't want that and having to worry about pooh in the bed. Posts: 263 06/05/10 04:55 PM	HI Cindy, yes the breeder said 4 times a day, little dogs eat little and often. When I first got him i was giving him Scrambled egg for breakfast at 6am, then complete puppy food at 10am, 2pm & 6pm, I soon realised he didn't really like that pattern though. I fill up the food twice a day now and leave it down, so he can eat when he likes, I don't think he does eat 4 times a day any more. I pick it up at 7 and he always goes all night without needing the toilet, he usually gets me up at 6.30am to go out and do his business. Teddy is so fussy, he won't even eat canned meat. When I was feeding him the Bakers complete he never touched the puppy food, it's only since i've tried to switch him to the Royal Canin that he's developed a liking for it, i think he only eats it because he really doesn't like the other stuff. The vet will take it back I've no doubt about that, I just want to find good food for teddy that he actually likes and i don't like the idea of having to keep switching, would rather get it right sooner rather that later. Posts: 1994 06/05/10 07:52 PM	My 5 dogs are on Taste of the Wild Salmon. It is dry kibble and no grain. I pay $42 for 30#. My chi is on Evo Weight Management.$60 for 28#. Evo is an excellent brand of food Puppy food is high in calorie. I would let Teddy eat that at all.JMO

Posts: 975 06/06/10 10:54 AM	I read all of the posts on eating, foods and ration's and realize just how lucky I am to have pugs. Pugs will eat and thrive on anything that isn't moving (and perhaps that is not true either) . They could live very happily with no teeth as they inhale all foodstuff akin to a vacuum cleaner at full power. Breakfast, for example, lasts exactly seven seconds as the one half cup of dry is consumed in one breath. When loose in the house , they hunt constantly for any treats laying around such as lint, carpet fibers, dust balls (wife doesn't read this) along with dropped paper pieces, stamps or left over mail. When baiting them at dog shows, I do think they would react to any bait used from watermelon to the little pieces of liver. My regard for you ladies only grows as I read of your struggles....

Moderator Posts: 2167 06/06/10 03:27 PM	Abby, I think Teddy is eating the puppy food with the high hopes that the puppy will oblige and eat that dreaded Royal Canine food in his bowl, thereby pulling a doggy trick! It's common doggy psychology and how all 5 year old dogs train their puppies to do their bidding. Davis, that is so true of pugs! There is nothing Lucy will not eat, NOTHING!!! She hovers around the kitchen listening for dropped food items or otherwise anything that she can inhale before I pick it up. And SHE HAS NO TEETH and that doesn't stop her. She thinks the trash can under my desk is where I store the treats and has been known to eat the flaps off used envelopes ( what's in the sticky stuff you lick anyway?). Her bowl is empty before I can put her food back in the fridge. She puts 3-4 mouthfuls in her mouth and THEN swallows it all at once to save time and energy. Crazy! and my Lucy, American Pugsley, age 15 -born 4/18/1996, DX. diabetic Nov. 07, blind 2/08, Weight 11 lbs., Humulin N 7 U , Homecooked chicken/white rice with canned Hills W/D My sweet, baby Lucy left me peacefully on October, 24, 2011 with her head on my shoulder and my comforting whispers in her poor little, deaf ear. It says on the box it has all the nutritional requirements, I hate that he is reduced to scrounging the puppy's food now, he used to lok forward to meal times but now he just ignores me when I put ihs dish down. he still has a good appetite, i amde roast chicken today and he wolfed down his portion, I feel really mean for making him have this 'health food' :(

It would be like letting your 2 year old eat 'crisps' all day (potato chips for us Americans). Even if they like them, it's not what is best, you know? I actually feed Nash and Claire in completely different rooms, or Nash would wolf down Claires and visa versa. Claire is a chow hound, and I'm convinced it's the Cocker in her. Nash is 1/2 Cocker and never met a meal he didn't like (except when he was on all those meds). My first Cocker was the same way. I always said she'd eat cardboard with gravy on it. But, I managed to keep her nice and slim. Nash is VERY solid, and built so very different. If hubby was feeding him, Nash would probably weigh 5 lbs more. Urghhh! Posts: 263 06/08/10 11:10 AM	Success!! I've found a good food for Teddy, Royal canin breed specific for chihuahuas!! He turned his nose up at first but managed to get him to eat a fair bit out of my hand, wouldn't eat it from the bowl though but hopefully he will in time. I'm so glad as i'm sure he's lost weight the last couple of weeks whilst I've been trying to get him to eat the other stuff, not that it would hurt him to lose a bit anyway. So glad Leo's not fussy!!

We feed her only 2 times a day, hopefully to help her chubbiness, but doubt it lol...since she has also been on the grain free food she doesn't act as hungry nor is she begging as much for 'hungries"

Posts: 334 06/13/10 10:21 AM	For what it's worth, my moments of panic always came at meal time when Buddy would not eat unless I sat on the floor and hand feed him one kibble at a time, and that with a lot begging. When I took him in for a curve, the vet technician noticed the same thing and poured hot water over the kibble and I add little pieces of wet food for additional smell. This makes some of a gravy and releases a bit of odor and now he just can't wait for me to put the food down. Of course, I also changed his food to a <no grain< food. Don't know if it is available in England, my understanding is that it is available in the US. It is the HORIZON Legacy Adult <grain free< and he is doing very good on that food.

Posts: 263 06/13/10 01:42 PM	Err, no :( Apart from that first day he has refused to eat it, that was a week ago. I have been worrying because he seemed to be starving himself, but nothing wrong with his appetite as will eat treats and chicken, cheese etc, and still scrounging the puppy food (but NOT getting any).Then earlier i read previous post about adding gravy and mixed a little hot water with it. He turned his nose up but then after our dinner I mixed some left over sausage into it, which he ate, then a bit later I caught him actually eating the food! Not sure if it was the taste & smell of the sausage that encouraged him, but I can't give him sausage every day, that would be just as bad as the old food. He is such a pest!
