My <little man< has not been feeling well lately and some days, it is hearbreaking to watch him. Once I am done with brushing him, cleaning and treating his paws, drops in his eyes, brushing (sometimes) his teeth, cleaning his ears, most of it twice a day, he is so sick of it that he just wants to jump off the couch and get away from me.
On April 8, he was on 7 units and when we took him in for a curve, the numbers were as follows:
8:30am Fasting 8.3 (150)
Feeding and injection
10:30am 7.8 (140)
12:30pm 9.1 (164)
2:30pm 20.6 (371)
4:30pm 20.6 (371)
He was increased by 1/2 unit first in the morning and then at night, a few days later and I have been feeding him exactly the same every day and giving him the same treats (egg whites after the injection and zucchini or green beans in the afternoon with a home made biscuit at around 7pm to appease his hunger).
Since he has not been well at all and we were getting kind of worried, we decided to take him back for another curve on Thursday May 13.
8:30am Fasting 17.2 (309)
Feeding and injection
10:30am 15.6 (281)
12:30pm 15.9 (286)
2:30pm 18.8 (338)
4:30pm 27.3 (491)
The vet suggested we stop beating ourselves and thinks we are doing everything right, measured food etc.etc.
He has been on 8 units since Friday. His appetite is still ravenous and he was at 18.5 pounds on the vet's scale (normal weight 22+).
Since about 2 weeks now, he started panting heavily again and it is becoming more frequent, he has had us up a few nights either for water and to go out and pee. Some days his poo is normal then he finishes with diarrhea. He does not pee often, but when he does, he pees a long time, then dribbles a few times and now very rarely asks to go out. Many times, we have to carry him out and coax him to do his business. He is still shedding a lot and Buddy having only one coat, his coat is very different from Cleo and difficult to say if his coat is affected.
Of course, the d...n paws continue to have infections so when he walks very slowly, it is also difficult to know if it is from the pain or general weakness. He still shows signs of anxiety and some nights we have to bring him up to the top of the bed where he is touching either one us.
I can relate to what Pamela was saying about Phoebe since going blind. Buddy has no interest in playing even if we sit on the floor and try and play with him. There are days where he just doesn't seem to find a comfortable position and keeps waking up and moving from one spot on the couch to another, from the couch to the floor, then on to his cushion, then back on the couch. It just seems that the only time he is well is when he has no food in his stomach (e.g. before his morning meal and after his morning walk as well as after his afternoon walk between 6pm up to 9pm until we feed him again.
My gut tells me that there is something else going on and I have asked our vet to get an estimate for an abdomen ultrasound. I had originally ask that we retest for Cushing however, at this time, he feels that the ultrasound would/could give us more information on the adrenal glands system, also because Buddy previously had pancreatitis.
Even though my gut tells me something else is wrong and the vet tells us we are doing everything right, it does not make it easier and it is simply gut wrenching to watch my baby boy deteriorating so rapidly.
Will keep you posted on what we will do.
