Posts: 301 04/05/10 07:21 PM	Tags : None Dr. Lee, I was just at the vet with our 8 yr old Rotty for a bacterial skin infection. Very excited that it's not yeast, as he's prone to that. I've noticed lately that his eyes are a bit cloudy. And when we were visiting back home a dentist friend also mentioned some cloudiness. So I just asked today. Vet advises that is it not cataracts, she can still see the back of the eye, but definitely some cloudiness probably due to aging. Any suggestions for supplements or anything we can do to slow down the process. Posts: 57 04/05/10 08:00 PM	Many dogs will get an older age change of the eyes called Nuclear Sclerosis (also called lenticular sclerosis). It occurs from a few reasons: as the cells within the nucleus of the lens divide and become more dense they become opaque, UV light exposure, oxidation and glycation. While nuclear sclerosis does not usually cause visual impairment on the same level as cataracts, it can still limit sight. While lens removal and replacement is often the treatment of choice for cataracts, it is rarely indicated for nuclear sclerosis. There are several products out there to help reduce the opacity. It has undergone two clinical trials at veterinary ophthalmologists and both tests showed an 82-83% improvement in lens opacity (in cases of nuclear sclerosis it was near 100%). Posts: 301 04/06/10 09:05 PM	Dr. Lee, other than Buddy's allergies (that we're still trying to figure out) doing a raw diet now and trying elimination. He has thyroid issues that he's on medication for. Thank you for your reply, I read about the Ocuvlet previously, however the price is quite expensive, even if we were to find it at a discount. I will check with our vet here to see if perhaps there is a generic product. Will be doing more research on nuclear sclerosis too. Thank you again.
