Diet change, need some help |
Lead | |

Well, since Nash's diet change to homecooked (boiled chicken, white rice, a touch of green beans, a bit of yogurt (heaping tsp), oh and about 20 sm kibbles
of SD sensitive stomach, which I plan to switch out when I finish this bag, I don't like it).......we've been having problems with messy bm's.
Sorry, but, it's not diarrhea, but they are very sloppy, very yellow (expected this). He's had a few accidents in the house because he hates winter,
and you nearly have to stand and keep pushing him back out to the area he goes.
But, I need to find something to firm his bm's up a bit. Any suggestions? It's starting to drive me crazy

Hi Cindy,
Were you feeding yogurt before you switched to home cooked? If not that might be the culprit. 3 of my pugs can't take dairy at all without being very loose. Joan |

Yes, actually but I am probably feeding a bit more than normal. I was giving the yogurt about 3-4 times a week, one meal. Lately, I've been giving it at
least once a day.
Maybe I should go back to every other day. Do you think oatmeal might firm things up a bit?

Someone please help me to remember this correct. Is it pumpkin that helps to firm up the poop or does it make it softer? Or is it one of the wonderful
things and you just have to find the right amount? I could be on the wrong track.

Actually pumpkin can do both! It conditions the bowel, and helps to normalize everything, I do use this, but have to be careful how much you start with. I
use a tsp once a day, but mypugs average about 20 lbs or so.

Good idea, many have mentioned the pumpkin. I'll have to see what I have hiding in the pantry. Pretty sure I have straight pumpkin as I planned on
baking pumpkin bread in the Fall, never happened, lol!

LOL, we can't have you pulling out any more of that hair Cindy! If Nashman insists on producing these sloppy bms, the oatmeal is a good idea if he can
take it. Maybe just a tsp. or so to start to see how it affects him, or has he had it before? I would use it in place of equal amounts of the rice. Take a
tsp. of the rice away and give the tsp. of oatmeal. Pumpkin wrecked havoc with Lucy's bowels!
I heard about the weather everywhere East of Phoenix!! It's been 80 degrees all week here and we've all dug out our shorts and tank tops again. Okay, so if I add the oatmeal (replace same of white rice)......it this cooked, or raw. Oh brother, I'm not too good at this, sorry.
Also, I remember that I added an egg to Nash's meal yesterday morning, scrambled.....no butter or anything. I've done this before. Maybe it was just too much yesterday. I do it in replacement of some chicken. Maybe that was the wrong thing. But tonight, I can't get him to poop for anything. I've let him out at least 7 times tonight. I'm not sure what is going on. Glad it's the weekend and I can watch him better.

If Nash has been having really loose stools, when they begin to be more normal (firm) their bowels are pretty much empty and it is not unusual to go for 24 hrs
or even more without any stools. I go thru this with one of my pugs on a regualr basis.
fyi when I give whole eggs to my pugs, some will always have loose stools. I think, same as people, if they are fed it every day, they would probably get used to it, but on an occasional basis, just the egg whites might be better, less fat, great protein. Hugs Joan |

Thanks for the advise Joan. Funny you should mention this......I sometimes will have issues with eggs. They will make my stomach gurgle.....BUT, not if I
scramble them. Weird ah?
I'll try the boiled for future.....and try to stay consistent. Nash finally had a bm this AM The joys of furmotherhood.......

See? Joan is our egg diet expert! She taught me to feed only egg whites because the yolks can cause diarrhea. How much we learn from each other! Boiled egg
whites. And Cindy, the oatmeal is cooked, not raw.

Okay, thanks. I think I'll try some over the next couple days. When he has accidents in the house the loose bm's are driving me nuts!
And, from now on, egg whites only!!!

Didn't read the whole thread but found out that the pumpkin helps both problems. I am not sure how that works, but it does!!
Elaine and Puck
Elaine
Angel Puck - Puck was dx in November, 2007 at the age of 12. She was well regulated on Novalin - 9 units 2x day. With a few minor exceptions she at Purina DCO and a tablespoon of a canned food. Add ins were pumpkin and chicken breast. Puckie left me May 6. 2010. She developed pancreatitis and was in such pain. She was a little HUGE light in each of my days. I still have my non- diabetic babies who love me unconditionally each and every day. Tucker a loyal and devoted 10 yo golden retriever and Toby, my incredibly neurotic loving mama's boy. |

Cindy re the loose stools,
Bella was having trouble with that on and off for 6 wks. I switched food one thing at a time, and that wasn`t it. Vet gave me the metronidazole, (Flagyl) and she is on a very low dose every morning, and so far perfect. It is a antibiotic, but is given to lots of liver dogs (and diabetic as well) to soothe the bowel. helps with IBS. No side effects. Can be given long term, I know some on the liver site have used it for yrs. I have had Bella on it for 3 wks now and she has been perfect. Probably my imagination, but her bgs seem more level as well. Recommended dose is 5-10 mg per pound 2-3 times per day so theoretically bella at 16 lbs should have 80-160 each time. I have been able to maintain her with good stools on only 60 mg once a day. It was a life saver for her, as she does not need to lose any more weight. And I get to sleep thru most nights. blessings everywhere. Joan |

Nash isn't due for his bloodwork and all for a few months. And everything was in good range last year (senior panel).
But, that is something that I will keep in mind. I'm glad that I finally figured out the yellowish poop......and hoping that they firm up a bit in the next few days. Some have mentioned Benefiber, would that help?

Benefiber might help. But you might be better off to go with an insoluble fiber to add bulk, and absorb the fluid. both would be good.
FYI: the flagyl is given not for the antibiotic effect, but for the soothing influence on the bowel. |

This is a new area for me, explain insoluable fiber? Brand name?

I am no expert either. but soluble fiber is one that dissoves in water. INSOLUBLE does not. Say like wheat bran, tho you think of it more of a stool
softener, it can slow down diarrhea or loose stools because of its bulk, and absorbs the water that shows up in loose stools. I will try and find a link for
this, as I am aboviously not good in this area. Just been looking it up lately because of Bella having this problem. then once I got her fixed up, I forgot
it all, just like cramming in school.
I`ll get back to you. this is confusing, see if you can sort it out. http://ezinearticles.com/...ber-in-IBS&id=508247
