Abbey came through with flying colours - thanks for thinking about us!

The growth on her eyelid was removed easily. Vet put a figure-8 stitch in. Her eye isn't even puffy. In fact, it looks as if nothing happened.

The cyst on her shoulder was a different story. It was one of those weird cysts that fills with watery fluid, then drains when it becomes huge. Vet didn't want to remove it because she didn't think it was hurting Abbey. She considered it costmetic. But, this last time, the cyst grew to the size of a baseball and it wasn't draining. So vet agreed that since she had to put Abbey under anesthetic for the eyelid growth, she'd remove the cyst at the same time. So now Abbey has an ugly line of black stitches on her shoulder.

She had a little trouble under anesthetic. Vet said her blood pressure kept fluctuating so she changed the flow constantly. She had removed the eyelid thingie with no problem and had started working on the cyst when Abbey's blood pressure started running amok. But since she'd already started, she decided to finish the job quickly.

She said erratic blood pressure is fairly common in older dogs. And, because we don't know anything about Abbey's past anesthetic experiences, we didn't know how she would handle it. Vet says she won't perform surgery on Abbey again unless it's absolutely necessary. The eyelid issue was necessary but vet still thinks the cyst was cosmetic. But it's nice that it's gone. The skin over the cyst was so stretched, I couldn't believe that it wasn't bothering Abbey.

Best news is no e-collar is required! Vet said Abbey would probably become depressed with the collar and wouldn't need it anyway. We brought one home, though, just in case. But sure enough - the redhead doesn't need it.

We had taken her to the clinic at 8 a.m. and picked her up at 2 p.m. She was pretty woozy but glad to be back at home. The next morning (Thursday), she wanted to go to the dog park, as usual, and she's been back to herself since then.

Abbey is a real trooper, as usual! Must be a redhead thing. Thanks again for thinking about us!

Thanks again, everyone! Abbey is still doing really well. Her eye is amazing - there's nothing there to tell that anything has been done to it. The incision from the cyst is looking good - it's just a little pink around the stitches now.

Re-check is on Wednesday this week and I'll return the e-collar to the vet. Vet was right - Abbey didn't need it. Thank goodness. It's always the dreaded e-collar that causes so much trouble after surgery!
