Posts: 23 11/23/09 12:13 AM	Tags : None I am desperate!! Shasta 10 yrs old Border Collie Mix - dx'd Thur taking 8 units of Humulin N twice a day Shasta will not eat and is acting very lethargic. I worried that since I gave her her morning insulin and she did not eat that she was low. I fed her by hand and got her to eat a little bit. Finally I got a bg reading and she was 389. I took her for a walk and checked her bg 2 hours later and she was going up. I checked her urine and did not find any trace of keytones. Now it's bed time and she is acting the same, lethargic. When she went out to pee she walked very slowly and then laid down. She is drinking right now but I can't get her to eat anything but graham crackers and if she is high I can't imagine that is good. HELP!!!

Administrator Posts: 7339 11/23/09 12:24 AM Administrator & Owner	OK calm down,, we will figure this out.... The graham crackers were not the best choice( full of sugar.).. But I know we do things out of desperation sometimes... Is she hunching her body a bit? by this I mean is she hunching her tummy upwards? How is she walking ??? Administrator Posts: 7339 11/23/09 12:26 AM Administrator & Owner	I don't want to frighten you.. Its OK if caught early ... But I'm thinking maybe Pancreatitis.or Ketoacidosis ... Do you have a emergency hospital near you? I highly recommend that you call any all night emergency hospital... We will figure out later what brought this all on... for now I would really like Shasta to see some one ASAP... If this is Pancreatitis its so much easier on her to heal if caught early.... she will need IV fluids.... Ill be up and waiting for your reply.... Last Edited By: Johanna13 11/23/09 01:36 AM. Jac, Ella (golden retriever, not diabetic), Abbey (golden retriever/Irish setter, not diabetic) beautiful Angel Jenny (golden retriever), and cats Mona and Ernie. Jenny passed away February 15, 2008 at almost 14 years old. Weight: 65 pounds. Diabetes, myasthenia gravis, hypothyroid. She has a son who is diabetic, so I am sure they keep track. Would love to know some info about this. Cindy and Nash Nash was born 9/2/1998, and is my sweet 1/2 breed Cocker Spaniel/English Springer Spaniel. He was dx'd with diabetes in November 2007 and is currently on 9 units of Novelin N twice a day. Nash went blind approximately 6 mnths after dx, has glaucoma and gets eye drops 5x day

Posts: 23 11/25/09 12:08 AM	I am so sorry that I did not post a reply sooner. I did take her to an emergency vet and they put her on an IV drip to get fluids into her. They also upped her Insulin to 15 units. She is back with me as of yesterday but has to go see her regular vet tomorrow for a curve test. I am so grateful for this group!! I have been getting BG readings more often by testing her ears but today I ran her down to the lady who grooms her (thankfully Shasta LOVES her) and had her cut her hair back and shave a square at the base of her tail (as recommended by a member here) to check her blood. I have not yet, even with the 15 units and her still not eating, been able to get her BG under 310. I have been feeding her cooked chicken and am able to feed her a few kibbles by hand but that is it. I do not understand while all of a sudden she wont eat her food. Is it because she is high??

She wasn't drinking or eating. She wasn't moving fast, really slow but not stumbling. I know I panicked but I just lost my Powder Girl and I totally thought I was going to lose Shasta. The emergency vet said I was making it more stressful for her by panicking...

It may have to go higher then that yet.... When I heard 8 units for a 69 lb dog I knew that was going to be this big issues here...

To be honest I just feel so helpless. She still has high numbers I have tested her 2 times today, this morning she was 355 at 6:30 this morning, I gave her 15 units and tested her at 1:30 (per vet request) and she was 310. Between the two tests all she had to eat was cooked chicken and a handful of kibbles. Do pets take fast acting insulin? My son is only on Novolog. He gets it through a pump but when he is high we give him a bolus to bring him into range. My son has never been on a slow acting insulin like Humulin without also taking a fast acting.

It's the same in so many ways... except dogs cant talk to us or tell us what they feel.. so we have to always be prepared. If you go to the main page and read Killians story, you will see that we all went through this... One day soon you too will be here helping some one else... it will become second nature to you... What insulin are you using?

That what I found so odd, why wouldn't she drink if she was so high? I cant WAIT to see my regular vet tomorrow. (He is close to retirement and only works 3 days a week) I refused to go see the original vet. 8 units... what the heck was he thinking!!! The emergency vet on Sunday was nice though and treated Shasta (and me) well.

If you want to try this it should be cooked slow and well and use a lot of the broth... Maybe small portions a few extra feedings a day.... same amount of the food you would normally give just smaller portions... Did they say she was starting to go into Ketoacidosis or Pancreatitis? does your release papers say that?

Sorry - I said the wrong thing, yes looking at the paper she had a mild case of ketoacidosis and was dehydrated. She was not vomiting, nor was she in pain. They just gave her fluids and insulin. Though they never got her numbers below 300, the vet seemed that is was "not that big a deal" so I guess I over reacted! I am glad I took her in though. She seemed much more alert and even managed a growl yesterday when someone walked by the house.

You caught this very fast ! Good for you....It could have been life threatening... WHAT WAS THAT VET THINKING WITH 8 UNITS ??? You should send him your emergency visit bill !!
