Remember that with Charlie. His jumping on your shoulders to kiss your face is a dominant alpha behavior. But that's something that I need to convince him hes lower or Ill never be able to leave the house... If you read that part is says that in the pack only the Alpha would leave.... so when I leave hes upset because its suppose to be him !!! I never looked at it that way before.

Posts: 197 (11/16/09 3:11 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	We have literaly spent months yelling no at Fritz and drop it! It has not worked other than he takes something runs with it and brings it back so that he gets a good dog. All the other weird behaviors are mostly under control. I read this article this morning and had the chance to use it within minutes! It worked! The arm across the neck works. Now, not the first time or the second or even the fifth, but it works. I don't say a word - I just push my arm across his neck, and he will drop the object/stop the behavior and lie down. He looks at me in a rather confused manner but I harden my heart and ignore him for a while. I finally feel like we are getting a grip on this thing! Thanks, Johanna

Cindy and Nash Nash was born 9/2/1998, and is my sweet 1/2 breed Cocker Spaniel/English Springer Spaniel. He was dx'd with diabetes in November 2007 and is currently on 9 units of Novelin N twice a day. Nash went blind approximately 6 mnths after dx, has glaucoma and gets eye drops 5x day

While I don't think my hounds as humans...I don't think they consider me a dog either. I disagree that solicting attention is a sign of dominence...watch puppies and that's how they react to their elders. My dogs all sleep in be with me,,,and all need to have some physical contact...I think it is again not dominance but comfort (emotional) seeking. Folks who see me wander the dog park with the hounds at my heals chuckle at my position as "leader of the pack" And this is not because I simply have a generally mild mannered breed...my pack has at time included some of the more dominent breeds...a GSD...pit bull mix...rotty mix...doberman mix I'm the leader because I control the resources and because I maintain pack order. My charlie loves to please me... and based on that he is learning to sit when I say sit... to stay when I say stay... and his reward is me telling him what a good boy he is with warm hugs and pets... He lives for that... That is his reward... I have only had Pit bulls... and I can tell you I do human stuff with them ! I talk to them as if they were human... and guess what >> they understand my every word !!! Most peoples children don't behave as well as my pity's do... And I have had so many people say so... Gezzz Killian wouldn't eat unless I was telling him a story !!!! Maybe its all wrong... who cares??? if it works then it cant be wrong for you... I even wrap up my dogs when there sick on the couch with pillows and blankie and heat the blanket in the dryer so its toasty warm .. They love that special treatment... Killian loved it the most.... They are masters at picking up cues,,,can distinguish between ordinary day to day conversation/praise and reprimand I suppose some folks might consider us goofy but I too talk all the time to my guys. I referred recently to my Irish setter Murphy. He and I shared the love of a particular easy chair. Often it was a race after dinner to get to it. If I was in it and Murff really wanted it he played a little game...dance around...run to the door like he needed to go out. My response was always a "gotta pee murff? want to go out?" Of course he didn't...9 times out of 10 by the time I got to the door he'd be in the chair. After an expecially tiring day he tired this can but my response was a stern "damn it Murphy...if I get up you're going out" With an enormous sigh he flopped on the floor. He didn't of course understand my words...but the intent was clear. Posts: 68 (11/30/09 7:01 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	awww Johanna, I was reading your post and I couldn't help but read between the lines ( I hope that is the right way to say this) anyway- you must be having some good times with Charlie cause you don't sound as stressed as you did before. The whole problem with describing and working out what is wrong with treating dogs as humans is that one may give the dog cues that they pick up as being superior to you without you realising it. It doesn't mean that you can't talk to your dog or let him on or -in your case- near your lap. I think that you are able or learning what the difference is. The Paris Hilton's of the world can't be bothered (IMO) to work with the dogs behaviour so they won't jump out bite when they are in their handbags. Patience, timing, and knowledge.. telling them stories is communicating your feelings, the tone is positive reinforcement- GOOD FOR YOU! LK My Gully

Both of them know to wait until we go out the door for them to come out, they don't pull on the leashes to control, and they know the usual commands, assorted tricks, and have never tried to show dominance over us. Prissy knows the names of all her toys, and a good protector and guardian for Jim, she knows when he is not feeling well and acts on it, that is her job. CeeCee, now we are still trying to figure out what her job is, but she does a good job of chasing chipmunks and deer out of the yard ROFL

It is not a twenty minute recovery. People tend to think the change has been immediate so that when their dog does not respond, they give up.
