Need meter recommendiation

Posts: 566 02/19/12 02:29 PM	Tags : None Didn't know where to put this, so you can move it if you like...I need to know which glucose tester you all think is the best for dogs..At the present time I am using a Bayer contour. The main reasons I am using it is because it takes just a tiny bit of blood, and it's super hard to get blood from DJ. The second reason is because, I test myself with an Accu-Chek Active. About once a week I check myself with both meters and they're always real close to the same reading, so I pretty well trust it to be accurate, at least on me. But I want to know how accurate it is on him. What do you all think is the best? Not having much luck with DJ..Will post the whole story later so you all can maybe give me some help..

Posts: 3846 02/19/12 07:08 PM Administrator	I used a human meter, freestyle flash. It was on sale at Walgreens with a full rebate, and I always got my strips on ebay for a good price. No meter is perfect, but as long as it gives you a decent reading...then I would just continue using your bayer one. Some people swear by the ones made for animals, but they are expensive and so are their strips! I took my meter in with me to the vet's, had them do a blood draw and I then did a reading. I forget now how much the meter was off from the lab results, but maybe 50? So then I always added that amount to my reading to give me a general idea. Tell us more about DJ! What's going on?

Posts: 566 02/19/12 09:41 PM	Thanks Judy..The one I use "Bayer contour" has one of the best reviews of all of them. I have 3 of them, they had the complete kits on sale once at Amazon for $20 I bought one and liked it so well I bought 2 more. I like to compare the readings ever now and then just to be sure. They're almost never over 4 or 5 points different. I also check them to the Accu-Chek that I use on myself..And I can hook them to the computer and save the log.. I'll give you all a report on DJ tomorrow. I've been waiting til things got a little stable, but looks like it's going to be awhile, IF ever.

Moderator Posts: 1494 02/19/12 09:46 PM	I used the Bayer Contour, also. It was easy to get blood from Sissy - she had a big old dog warty thing on her back with no nerves and that baby really bled! Sorry to hear you are having trouble with DJ. Sissy, a 15 1/2 year old lhasa apso left for the Rainbow Bridge on February 28, 2009. She was diagnosed on September 21, 2007. You can run and your eyes are clear, my girl. On March 8, 2009, we adopted Fritz, a Bichon Frise puppy. He is a rescue dog with a beautiful spirit.

Posts: 10004 02/19/12 09:50 PM Administrator	Oh gosh Ed, this is bad....I'd have to go look, I don't remember what one I used for Nash! I can look at it later and let you know. But, compare to everyone's, I think they all work pretty well on our animals. As Judy said, the big thing is having it calibrated against your Vets blood draw. Then you will know how accurate it is, and be able to adjust your readings accordingly. Please tell us what is going on with DJ! Cindy and Nash Nash was born 9/2/1998, and is my sweet 1/2 breed Cocker Spaniel/English Springer Spaniel. He was dx'd with diabetes in November 2007 and is currently on 9 units of Novelin N twice a day.
