Well..My 5 yr old yellow lab mix was diagnosed with diabetes Friday...Vet has started her out on 18 units twice a day..(don't know what kind yet..didn't have enough sense about me to ask That question)..About 5 weeks ago she had an ear infection that caused her face to swell so bad her eyes were swelling shut. She was put on a steroid and antibiotics, they told me she would drink more....so I noticed that even though she was off the steroids, she was still drinking ALOT and needing to go out more(she was waking me during the night)...she stared having "accidents" in the house, which she never does. I feel like I'm at my wits end...it is a fight to give her these shots and I'm always scared that I'm not getting it all in..this dog (Maddie) is our baby..so I have to get this right..we got her from a friend of my oldest daughter when she was about 4 weeks old(they were gonna take them to the pound)..she was so little we had to bottle feed her for a bit because she didn't know how to...

I am thrilled to find this site, there seems to be a great deal of information for the human diabetic but info is scarce for the pet. I have three dogs and all are rescues. Rascal is 11 years old and I have had him since 6 months. A few years ago he developed pancreatitis, almost died but thanks to a wonderful vet he survived. 9months ago he was diagnosed with diabetes, pretty much inevitable having had the issues with the pancreas. Mine and my husbands first thoughts were how the heck can we do this as both of us get sick at the site of a needle. It was not easy but it had to be done, when I think of how much I shook in the begining I am amazed Rascal doesn't run from me. Long story short he is on Caninsulin twice a day 12 units and he is 33lbs. I had to add chromium 100mcg to his diet as he was not absorbing the insulin in the beginning. The chromium solved the problem for a while and he had been reduced from 14 units to the 12 units. He had a bladder infection which was also...

Hi folks,
My beloved 5 year old golden has been in the hospital since Thursday night with what they thought was IMHA triggered by vaccines, but now they are saying ITP. Still waiting for today's update, but as of last night his red blood cell count had been holding at 28 for a little less than 24 hours. When the hospital vet looked at his blood slide she guessed his platelets (on Sunday) were at 15,000, but when the actual test came back it said 9,000. Again, that actual count came back Monday (sent out Sunday). Yesterday, Emmet (my dog) was able to move from the emergency hospital to my own vet. At 5:00 yesterday the vet looked at a slide and guessed the platelets were between 30,000 and 40,000, but with the inaccurate guess previously I'm not sure what to trust. I really like my vet, but these platelet counts seem to take 24 hrs which to me means they are not accurate of the current state... They keep saying that he's "not out of the woods" and can't promise...

Hello to all on this forum.

I have a interesting story regarding my two miniture poodles Chewy & Bob. They are both 10 year old males from two totally different parents. Chewy was obtained from a breeder and Bob came from a regular run of the mill puppy shop. Chewy was the first diagnosed with Diabetes about 2 yrs ago. and much to my suprise Bob was diagnosed with Diabetes just this month. Now what are the odds of finding two darling little poodles from totally different backgrounds who develop the same problems? My vet says its very common in Miniture Poodles but I think this is very unusual. Chewey almost passed away on me by the time we discovered he had Diabetes. Luckily with Bob my previous experience made me aware of his symptoms very early on , (the unquenching thirst and constant urination). It went on for a couple of weeks and I took him in for lab tests and examination. Sure enough Bob also had Diabetes? Now I have what they would say is...

My gorgeous West Highland Terrier Kizzy is 10 years old and was diagnosed with Diabetes 2 weeks ago. So far she is on 5 units of Caninsulin twice a day. She has ALWAYS loved chicken, it has been her favourite for as long as i can remember. And she has always been brilliant about eating her dry food, we've never had any problems with it. But, now she's refusing to eat, even her chicken, or the wet canned food that she loves but never gets, she wont eat anything. She shakes every few seconds and it's scaring the life out of me. She is my baby, I hate to see her unwell and I don't know how to cope with this. The vet has been brilliant and she is due to go into the vet tomorrow to see how the insulin is working.
What are your dogs eating? What is safe to give them? I will try anything at this stage, I can't stand to see her like this when she has been like a little puppy all her life, jumping around and playing. He was there for a couple days. They called me to confirm he had diabetes, pancreatitis and keytones. He was transfered to our regular vet and they showed me how to give the insulin and take his blood sugar levels from his ear. He has been eating W/D since he took sick, but since insulin, needles and food is getting quite costly I would really love to try and start making homemade food for him but I have no idea how to even start this. The vet told me I could give him carrots as treats but it seems like the carrots just make his sugar go up. I heard that carrots have sugar in them so is it a good idea to give them to a diabetic dog even though my vet did not say anything about carrots having sugar. I'm still so very LOST at what I should be...
