Our worse fears has become a reality..DJ has been showing signs of diabetes for the past couple of week..We didn't spot it right away because he didn't really change all that much. He's always been a big eater, but he started drinking more water than usual. We have always checked his blood every couple of months ever since we got him. The last time we checked it in Sept. it was 98.. I checked it Wed. morning it was 383, we tried to get him into the Vet. but the earliest they could take him was yesterday morning. I checked it Wed. evening it was 423. That was fasting for about 6 hours..Anyway we got him in yesterday. They did complete blood work. Everything seems to be ok..They put him on 6 units of insulin twice a day, for a week to see how he does, then we'll take it from there..Oh yeah, and a diet and plenty of exercise, which he already gets plenty of. We walk 2 or 3 times a day and Panda keeps him moving all the time..So everybody wish us luck.

Walter had a crash last Sunday night after the Vet increased his insulin to 6 units. He spent the night at the hospital. He is fine now eating good and feeling spunky. But when I test his glucose level before its food/shot time it is really low. In the 50's. He isn't acting weird and it was like that 2 days in a row. I have been decreasing is insulin. This AM I only gave him 3 units at 6:30 am and by noon it was 85. So Im guessing to keep lowering the units. Anyone else deal with this? Could he have had something that would cause temporary blood sugar increasing? He is now getting fed Blue Buffalo light. I'm wondering if it just was his old food. Thanks

Well..My 5 yr old yellow lab mix was diagnosed with diabetes Friday...Vet has started her out on 18 units twice a day..(don't know what kind yet..didn't have enough sense about me to ask That question)..About 5 weeks ago she had an ear infection that caused her face to swell so bad her eyes were swelling shut. She was put on a steroid and antibiotics, they told me she would drink more....so I noticed that even though she was off the steroids, she was still drinking ALOT and needing to go out more(she was waking me during the night)...she stared having "accidents" in the house, which she never does. I feel like I'm at my wits end...it is a fight to give her these shots and I'm always scared that I'm not getting it all in..this dog (Maddie) is our baby..so I have to get this right..we got her from a friend of my oldest daughter when she was about 4 weeks old......any advice on how to make giving the shots easier for us both would be greatly appreciated..any advice on any of it would...

Ok back again. It looks like Baxter is now going to be DXed with cushings(on top of the diabeties). Has the all the signs and the first lab test did not look good. They sent a urine sample in yesterday so should hear something soon. He is 7 1/2 years old, his diabeties is somewhat under control, but now the new symptoms of the cushings are changing things. He is not in any pain and seems very happy, he just is changing. I am leaning towards not going any further with testing or treatment and just make the most of the days we have left. Is there anyone out there that has let nature take it course and can tell me what to expect and how long we have left with him?

Thanks!

Her bgs have been really stable and she has been eating well but she seems so thin and frail. She just doesn't seem like herself - she sleeps so much all the time now. It is nothing I can put my finger on - it is just a feeling I have that something is not right.

Also, I noticed tonite that she has a lump on the side of her neck. It is slightly bigger than a nickel, moves around easily and doesn't seem to be painful. My only concern is that it came up practically overnight. I am thinking it is just a lipoma but I am not sure. I don't know whether to throw the panic button but I am uneasy. Any thoughts?

Also, I was reading about a dry food that is certified low-glycemic, Nutrisica? Is anyone familiar with this one?
